The Limelight: MOSKAL
[MIKARA] How did you decide you wanted to be a fashion designer?
[STEPHANIE] I have always been a creative individual with wide ranging interests. Fashion became a way to explore and research all the topics I am interested in. Thru fashion I have freedom to learn whatever I please and apply it to design.
[MIKARA] Who is the Stephanie Varey woman? Describe them in 3-5 words.
[STEPHANIE] The Moskal woman is, confident, conceptual and daring.
[MIKARA] How do you define fashion?
[STEPHANIE] Defining fashion as a whole is very vague. Different tiers of fashion are defined differently based on what they value. For my brand Moskal, I value inspiration, concept, shape and construction. Fashion is a means to represent an artistic concept in a physical wearable form.
[MIKARA] The designs you create are no doubt INCREDIBLE and detailed, but who and which things were your inspiration while creating your latest collection?
[STEPHANIE] For my most recently collection Rita FW18 shown at Toronto Women's Fashion Week, I was inspired my the physical geography of North American farming. I focused on my muse Rita Bishop, an 84 year old farmer and her life as a strong women in the agriculture sector.
[MIKARA] How has your brand evolved from 2 years ago?
[STEPHANIE] After 2 years I am to put a stronger focus on my concepts and originality. I look forward to the future of the Moskal brand.
[MIKARA] Which trend(s) are you currently loving ?
[STEPHANIE] I don't follow trends. If you try to create on trend garments, you are simply regurgitating what already exists. I research color trends, but that is the extent.
[MIKARA] There’s so much pressure for designers to come out with their greatest collection season after season. What advice would you give to young designers just starting out and hoping to make it in the industry?
[STEPHANIE] The best and most honest advice I can give is that fashion is hard. It is not always fun. It will test you emotionally and creatively. It can be painful at times, but if you can weather the criticism and competition it is worth the struggle. Your hard work will pay off, it just takes time.
[MIKARA] Outside of fashion designing, what do you do for fun?
[STEPHANIE] I spend a lot of time outdoors hiking and being in nature. I get most of my ideas when I am in the forest.
[MIKARA] Is there a celebrity/influencer you would love in one of your designs? Why?
[STEPHANIE] I would love to see Lady Gaga wear the Moskal brand. She is such an amazing advocate for the arts.
[MIKARA] Coming to closure with this interview, what's next for the brand?
[STEPHANIE] The Moskal brand over the next few years will start to focus more on custom pieces and building the Moskal network.
