The Limelight: Nola Black Interview

Hey ! Welcome to another week of The Limelight. More Mikara Blog Limelight is a series of interviews with designers on their designs and journey to the fashion industry. For this week I wanted to share with you NOLA BLACK, which is based in Nigeria. I spotted her work on Instagram on a muse and thought that particular ensemble was very becoming for it to have no colors other that black and white. I'm very big and attracted to colors, and feel it speaks a tone that I don't verbally. Browsing through her current collection and reviewing her brand, shows the element she wants for in her client,

duality.

Check out the interview, The Limelight: Nola Black :

NOLA BLACK

[MIKARA] How did you decide you wanted to be a fashion designer?

[Nola] I didn't decide even up till now, I mostly evolved and connected the dots. From time (talking from about 7 years old), I curated a lot, everything from moodboards, books, magazines and life really, I only started to create afterwards. My individual and the inability for one to evade fashion - it is a physiological form of expression and I needed it to mean something.

[MIKARA]  According to you, what is your favorite part about being a fashion designer?

[NOLA] Watching the flux. I enjoy watching the movement and the direction fashion takes us. I also say watching because it is uncertain. I am always curious. Witnessing where it all connects - fashion, time and humans. We tell everything through what we wear, just imagine the stories.

[MIKARA] The designs you created are no doubt INCREDIBLE, but who and which things were your inspiration while creating your new collection?

[NOLA] Everything. My emotions, my reality and the myriad of things I surround myself with aka art, visuals, books, music etc.

[MIKARA]  How has your brand evolved from 2 years ago?

[NOLA] Nola Black was launched in 2009 and has gone through phases of modification, I would say Nola Black has evolved laterally across all components of the brand. The old Nola Black was full of vibrant colours and now here we are, exploring duality.

[MIKARA] Which trend(s) are you currently loving ?

[NOLA] We are not trend focused but trend convergent, but everything edgy yet minimal is our go to.

[MIKARA]  How do you want women to feel when wearing your clothes?

[NOLA] Seen. I want them to feel seen even if its by themselves.

[MIKARA]  There‚Äôs so much pressure for designers to come out with their greatest collection season after season. What advice would you give to young designers just starting out and hoping to make it in the industry?

[NOLA] To continue to search within, you are literally god. Just look inwards, reach far into yourself. That's the only place authenticity comes from.

[MIKARA]  Is there a celebrity/influencer you would love in one of your designs? Why?

[NOLA] Janelle Monea because Black & White....duh! lol

[MIKARA]  Coming to closure with this discussion, I noticed your collection is known for black and white; will you be venturing out to other colors?

[NOLA] I would say Nola Black encompasses all colours, just by being Black and White.

[MIKARA] Outside of fashion designing, what do you do for fun?

[NOLA] I'm an art & cultural producer by night.
